The plowed field – October 2020

After the long summer break we resume work on the model layout. We are now focusing on the reliefs around the goods yard, partly already completed (learn more). The relief is quite steep, becoming flatter at the border of the 3rd module.
We will use this space, and then the adjacent one in the 4th module to create an agricultural area with an olive grove, a plowed field and the outbuildings.

As usual, we will work off-site to better take care of the details. Therefore we model a polystyrene block fitting between the ribs of the module.

We are going to use a couple of tools to process the polystyrene block: a traditional cutter and a foam cutting bow. With the bow we shape the polystyrene, while the incisions are obtained by replacing the bow with the larger tip.

We then smooth the block with coarse sandpaper.

Let’s now carve the furrows of the plowed field and the escarpment irregularities. We will subsequently provide a retaining wall.

To keep the the carving details, we do not apply paper or plaster as usual, we glue the sterilized and sieved soil directly onto the polystyrene block instead.

We apply the latex glue to fix the ground and pebbles and highlight the ridge slightly airbrushing with acrylic varnish.

Finally we fix the vegetation: fiber grass in different lengths, turfs and bushes, small trees.

Finally we fit the block on its place on the layout and then connect it to the others.
